These vegan whole grain waffles are perfectly crunchy on the outside and sinfully fluffy on the inside. They’re also super simple to make, and ready in a pinch. Since they’re made with whole grain spelt flour and zero processed sugars, they make for a delicious treat that just so happens to be ridiculously healthy, too! What more could you possibly ask for?
Which waffle maker to use?
I like to use my Grandma’s old-school cast iron waffle iron to make them. This helps me avoid the nasty chemicals present in the nonstick and Teflon coatings which are so common in the more modern waffle-makers. Read our article on Cookware and Storage: How to avoid toxic chemicals in your kitchen to learn more about this topic!
I’m currently searching for brands which still make old-school cast-iron waffle makers, and will update this post with links as soon as I find some!
Toppings
The flax seeds and whole grain flour give these waffles a wonderful nutty taste, so I admittedly love to eat them just as is sometimes. However, my favourite toppings are dark chocolate, roasted hazelnuts and fresh berries. This combination is a childhood favourite for my sister and I, though I must admit that a drizzle of maple syrup is also amazing! Feel free to use whichever toppings you like though, of course.
