Aka the best thing you’ll have this Fall. This persimmon (also called kaki/ caqui) and berry smoothie is incredibly simple to make. It has just 4 ingredients and will satisfy your sweet tooth, guaranteed!
It is incredibly smooth, sweet, and really just perfect for breakfast or as a sweet snack. Super quick to make, too!
You’re going to want to use very ripe persimmons for this recipe. Fun fact:
The difference between Kakis/Caquis and Persimmons:
Even though in the English language no distinction is made (I believe), in the Spanish language we have two terms for the fruit:
- Kakis/ Caquis are dark orange in colour, extremely sweet, and have a soft/gelatinous texture. They’re too soft to slice, so they’re usually eaten with a spoon (like you would a kiwi) or used for smoothies such as this one!
- ‘Persimón’ fruits are much lighter in colour, have a less intense flavour and a hard, firm texture. You usually slice them and eat them like you would an apple.
Fun fact: they’re both actually the same fruit, but harvested at different times and processed differently! Both Kakis and Persimmons are harvested from the Diospyros kaki fruit tree. Persimmons are harvested unripe (or semi ripe), whereas kakis are harvested fully ripe. There are several methods to ‘ripen’ the persimmons without letting them turn soft, one of them being putting them in closed containers with liquor. The ethylic acid that the liquor releases ripens the fruit whilst keeping the texture firm!
Personally, I much prefer Kakis for their lovely sweetness. They turn this Kaki and Berry smoothie into such a treat!
We have a Kaki tree in our garden, and when Fall comes around, there’s always a huge amount of kakis ripening at the same time. This smoothie is a great way of using them up! We also use wild mint from our garden for this kaki smoothie, but you can of course use store-bought, too!
Top tip: If you find yourself in a similar situation of having more kakis than you can handle, you can freeze them whole! That way you avoid letting them fall on the ground and being wasted and can use them throughout the year!

Persimmon Berry Smoothie with Mint
Ingredients
Instructions
-
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. That's literally it!
Note
If the Kakis are ripe enough, you won't even need to add water or plant milk to blend - they will be juicy enough on their own! Leaving out the added liquids lends this smoothie a super thick, creamy texture!
